I got a ViewSonic GA655 monitor (15-inch) at a yard sale today and
hooked it up to my Performa 6116 (replacing an AOC Spectrum 13-inch).
The picture seems really good, but it seems like the refresh rate might
not be right (maybe my imagination?), and the screen fonts look
bitmappier than they did with the Spectrum. When I go to the Monitors &
Sound control panel, there's only one option for resolution/refresh:
Recommended--640x480 at 67Hz. I have a StarTech Mac LC to VGA adapter
(with 6-pin DIP switch) which I had been using with the Spectrum. The
tech person set it up for the Spectrum right at the store (with pins 1,
4, 5, and 6 in the ON position), and the picture looked fine, fonts
good, etc. I'm trying to figure out whether the switches need to be
adjusted for the ViewSonic, but it's a bit confusing. The instruction
sheet has instructions for six different models, and I think I'm
supposed to be looking at the one that's called "Mac/IBM Adaptor:
15DM/HF-6p." It has Modes 1 through 6 (possible setting combinations)
for a 13" and 16" monitor but not a 15". Which size should I follow? Or
do I need to call the tech to come over and set it for me? When he set
it for the Spectrum, he experimented with several settings (restarting
the Mac after each one) till he came up with the 1456 setting), and I'm
afraid I'm going to really mess things up if I try to mimic him!

Does it have one for VGA? That would likely be the best choice, that or
SVGA.

Before you start though write down the current settings since the work.
Worse comes to worse you can go back to those settings.

16" might work but it isn't the best choice.

With the setting you have you are not near the limits of the monitor.
Thus it tends to show lower resolution clearly, very clearly.
It's sort of like having a really good stereo playing a old record (if
you know what that is). The good stereo reproduces the poor sound very
well.
